The Swiss Mercenaries performed service in the French Army during the Medieval and Renaissance periods. They were among the finest, most proficient soldiers in the world and had a nearly two century run of battlefield successes. Their tactics were eventually copies and mastered by imitators such as the German Landsknechts, who were bitter rivals of the Swiss Mercenaries, and in 1525 the Swiss were defeated at Pavia as part of Francis I’s army.
